What are Front Wheel Drive, Rear Wheel Drive and All Wheel Drive System?
Every car features one of three basic drivetrain layouts: Front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), and four- or all-wheel drive (4WD or AWD).
In a front-wheel-drive car, the transmission channels the engine’s power to the front wheels only. Rear-wheel-drive cars rely, as the term implies, on their rear wheels for motion, while four- or all-wheel drive cars have power at all four corners. Each layout comes with pros and cons that affect the way the vehicle behaves and defines its handling, especially in inclement weather.
